Overview
Most Cairo itineraries devote a single morning to Giza and call the job done. This one gives the pyramids the time they deserve and then keeps going — to Saqqara and the Step Pyramid, which predates Giza and is the more interesting site archaeologically, and into the medieval city, where the mosques, the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili tell the other half of Egypt’s story. A full museum morning covers the pharaonic collections. The pace allows for Cairo’s traffic, which is the single most underestimated factor in planning an Egyptian city itinerary, and leaves afternoons flexible rather than scheduled to the minute.

Important Notes
Cairo is hot from late spring through summer and the Giza plateau offers almost no shade — an early start matters more here than in most destinations, and midday visits in July and August are genuinely uncomfortable. Museum arrangements and which collections are open have changed in recent years and are confirmed before travel rather than assumed. Entering the pyramid interiors involves narrow, steep passages and is not suitable for everyone. Entry requirements differ by nationality and are verified before confirmation.
