Overview
What distinguishes Mauritius from other Indian Ocean destinations is that there is somewhere to go. Beyond the lagoon and the reef there is a genuine island interior — the Black River Gorges, the coloured earths and waterfall at Chamarel, tea estates, and Port Louis with its market and its mixed Creole, Indian, Chinese and French heritage. This journey keeps the resort as the base and adds two excursion days, leaving the rest free. It suits couples and families equally, and unlike a single- island resort destination it does not require you to stay in one place for a week unless you want to.
Highlights
- Beach resort base on north or west coast
- Black River Gorges and Chamarel's coloured earths
- Tea estates and a scenic waterfall
- Port Louis market and Creole heritage
- Catamaran sailing and dolphin watching
- A real island interior beyond the lagoon

Ideal For
Accommodation
Beachfront resort on the north or west coast, matched to your travel party — family resorts with pools and children's facilities, or quieter adult-oriented properties. Half-board and all-inclusive are both quotable; unlike the Maldives, dining outside the resort is genuinely possible here, which changes the calculation. Properties are confirmed at quotation stage, subject to verification and availability.

Important Notes
Mauritius has a cyclone season during which weather can disrupt excursions and sea conditions; the season and its severity vary year to year and are confirmed before travel rather than assumed. The island's seasons are inverted relative to the northern hemisphere, which surprises travellers planning around a northern summer. Boat and catamaran excursions are weather-dependent. Entry requirements differ by nationality and are verified before confirmation.
