Overview
This is the route most travellers to Georgia actually want: a few days of history and food in Tbilisi, then the coast. Batumi is unlike anywhere else on the Black Sea — a mix of belle époque architecture, modern towers, a long promenade and subtropical gardens — and it functions as a genuine summer resort city rather than a beach add-on. The two are linked by a comfortable train or an internal flight rather than a long drive. A half-day at Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital and a UNESCO site, sits naturally on the Tbilisi leg. This journey suits families and groups particularly well because the coast half needs no scheduling at all.
Highlights
- Historic old Tbilisi and Rustaveli Avenue

Important Notes
Batumi is a summer destination — the beach season is short and the city is much quieter and wetter outside it, so timing matters more here than for most coastal packages. The beaches are pebble rather than sand, which surprises some travellers; suitable footwear helps. Train and internal flight schedules between Tbilisi and Batumi vary by season and are confirmed before travel. Entry requirements differ by nationality and are verified before confirmation.
